Big Sur is the 70-mile stretch of Highway 1 south of Carmel. Cliffs on one side, redwoods on the other, almost no cell signal once you pass Bixby. Three day plans below, each built for a chauffeured car — meaning you can actually look out the window without veering into the oncoming lane.
Day 1 — The classic run
9:30am · Pickup at hotel. First stop Bixby Bridge for the photos everyone takes. Pull off on the north side for the iconic angle.
10:30am · Point Sur Lighthouse pullout. If a tour is running it's three hours — usually skip and keep going.
12:30pm · Long lunch at Nepenthe. Reservations help, but the patio is first-come and worth a wait. Ambrosia burger, Phoenix view. See dining.
2:30pm · McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. 10-minute round-trip walk to the overlook. The only waterfall in California that drops straight into the ocean.
4:00pm · Turn around. Optional stop at Pfeiffer Beach on the way back — the purple- sand beach reachable only via Sycamore Canyon Road (unmarked turn-off; the driver knows it).
6:30pm · Back in Carmel before dark. Highway 1 north of Big Sur is unlit and twisty; daylight is a feature.
Day 2 — Tasting menu at Sierra Mar
3:00pm · Late departure. Stop at Garrapata State Park for the cliff-trail walk and the cypress grove.
4:30pm · Bixby Bridge at late afternoon when the crowds thin.
6:30pm · Arrive at Post Ranch Inn for dinner at Sierra Mar (tasting-menu guide). Tasting menu runs 2.5–3 hours; pair with a glass each, not the full pairing, if you want to sleep.
10:30pm · Drive home. The unlit Highway 1 return is the reason this day plan exists with a chauffeur and not without one.
Day 3 — Beach + bakery short loop
For days when you want to see Big Sur but not commit to the full Nepenthe-and-McWay run. Bixby at 10am, Big Sur Bakery for pastries and a wood-fired lunch, walk the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park redwoods, back in Carmel by 4pm. Three or four hours of car time round-trip — easier on people who get tired of windshield time.
What to know before going
Cell service drops past Garrapata and doesn't come back until you return. No gas between Carmel and Big Sur Village; the chauffeur fills up beforehand. Highway 1 closes periodically for slides — we check road status the morning of and reroute if needed. Pack a layer; even in August the coast can sit at 58°F when it's 78°F inland.
