Carmel Boutique Hotels

Hand-picked small inns in Carmel-by-the-Sea, plus a few in Pacific Grove — character, location, room counts under 60, and walking distance to the beach, the galleries, and dinner.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a town of inns. The whole place is barely a square mile, the building heights are restricted, and the biggest hotel inside the village has under 80 rooms. That makes it ideal for boutique-hotel travel. A short list of the ones we send guests to.

L'Auberge Carmel

Twenty rooms in a 1920s building two blocks off Ocean Avenue. Aubergine — the peninsula's Michelin restaurant — is in the same building, which makes the tasting-menu logistics easy. Quiet, courtyard, the most "European inn" of the bunch.

Cypress Inn

The Doris Day–co-owned pet-friendly inn at Lincoln & 7th. Forty-some rooms, a courtyard, and a bar (Terry's) that's a destination in itself. Walk to the beach in eight minutes, walk to dinner in three.

La Playa Carmel

Larger than the others (around 75 rooms) but still feels boutique. Garden grounds, ocean glimpses, two blocks from the beach, walking distance to everything in town. Good for groups traveling together where a few couples want adjacent rooms.

Hotel Carmel

Renovated mid-century property on San Carlos & 4th. Brighter, more modern aesthetic, smaller rooms, fair price for the village. The cocktail bar pulls a local crowd.

Tally Ho Inn & Tradewinds

Two small properties under a single owner. Tally Ho is the terrace-and-ocean-view spot near Mission Ranch; Tradewinds has an Asian-inflected garden aesthetic on Mission Street. Quieter than the central drag.

Mission Ranch

South-edge-of-town small inn on Clint Eastwood's working property. Pasture views, sheep, a roadhouse restaurant, and a 10-minute walk down to the white sand of Carmel River Beach. Quieter than the central drag, and the dinner room is a destination on its own.

How to coordinate transport

From any village inn, an airport pickup at MRY is 20 minutes; SJC is 90+; SFO is closer to 2.5 hours. Most guests do the long airport with us, walk everywhere in town, and book the car again for a 17-Mile Drive day or a Big Sur day-trip.

Small inn. Big day. Easy ride.
