Where to Stay on the Monterey Peninsula

An overview of where to base yourself on the Monterey Peninsula — Pebble Beach resorts, Carmel-by-the-Sea inns, Pacific Grove guesthouses — and how to coordinate airport transfers and daily drivers from each.

The peninsula has three lodging clusters and they don't feel like each other. Pebble Beach is gated golf-resort, Carmel-by-the-Sea is village-walkable inn-and-cottage, Pacific Grove is quiet coast-side guesthouse. Pick the cluster that matches the trip — and a chauffeur to bridge the rest.

Pebble Beach

The Lodge at Pebble Beach, The Inn at Spanish Bay, and Casa Palmero are the three resort options inside the gate. Golf- forward, ocean views, full-service. Downsides: nothing is walkable to a restaurant outside the resort, so dinner anywhere else needs a car. Airport transfers to Monterey (MRY) are 20 minutes; to San José (SJC), 90+.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

A square mile of inns and cottages, walkable to the beach, the shops, and most of downtown's restaurants (see the village guide). La Playa, the Cypress Inn, L'Auberge Carmel, Hotel Carmel — each has its own character. Galleries, dinner, and morning coffee are all on foot. You only need a car for 17-Mile Drive or day-trips down to Big Sur. See the boutique hotel picks.

Pacific Grove

Just over the hill from Monterey, with a quiet seven-block downtown on Lighthouse Avenue and a paved recreational trail along the coast. Asilomar Conference Grounds, the Martine Inn, and a handful of B&Bs sit on the bluff. Closer to Cannery Row than Carmel is; farther from Big Sur. Good base for a wildlife-first trip (monarchs, tide pools, the Aquarium).

Monterey

Cheaper, more conference-hotel feel, with the Aquarium and Cannery Row at hand. Fine for a one-night airport bookend; less of a reason to spend a full vacation here unless you're working.

How to coordinate transport

Most guests do an airport meet-and-greet (SJC or SFO), a 17-Mile Drive day, a Big Sur day, a dinner-and-back run, and an airport return. We pre-stage the car for each, so the front desk doesn't need to call us — the driver is parked outside at the start time. See a typical day plan.
